MCKENZIES

Originally a dated department store on Hurstmere Road, this project involved transforming the site into a vibrant mixed-use precinct. It delivered new retail, commercial, and hospitality spaces. Existing buildings were selectively retained, stripped back, and upgraded, while others were removed. This created a central open-air courtyard and laneway.

Key heritage elements were preserved and integrated into a post-industrial design approach, including exposed steel roof trusses and original brickwork. The discovery and restoration of the original ceramic facade added further character and authenticity.

The revitalised development has contributed to the renewal of central Takapuna, creating a dynamic destination for retail and hospitality.
